Most people that have panic attacks have had a day time attack, but can you have night panic attacks? The answer is yes. Night panic attacks can happen all the time. The fact of the matter is that panic attacks as a whole can happen anytime. Whether it is day or night, or if you are awake or asleep. However, it is important to keep in mind that most people are unaware of night panic attacks, because they are far less common than the day time panic attacks that we see all of the time. Now let’s talk about a few of the symptoms that you may have if you have a night time attack. After all, having one of these night time panic attacks is always scary, especially if you do not know what is going on!

First of all, you are going to wake up very abruptly out of a dead sleep. Most of the time, you will be unable to identify the triggers that caused you to wake up. You will then notice that you are sweating, a lot! Almost like you just had a nightmare, but you can’t seem to remember having one. You may also experience a rapid increase in your heart rate and even some trembling. Other people sometimes have a shortness of breath, and even the chills. This is something that can be very scary for some people to wake up to especially when you consider the fact that you most certainly may not know what is going on. If you wake up like this, chances are that you’ve just had a night panic attack.

So why do people get so scared from night panic attacks? The main reason why people get so scared is not because of the panic attack itself. After all, panic attacks are very scary, but they are not dangerous, and they are not harmful to your body. In fact, this is your body’s way of dealing with stress, no matter what time of the day it is. What is so scary is that, most of the time, a panic attack feels like a heart attack. So when you wake up in the middle of the night with these problems, you think you are dying. The truth of the matter is that, usually, night panic attacks only last a few minutes (less than 10), meaning that it’s over very quickly. However, it usually takes people a lot longer than that to calm down after such an episode.

Stopping these panic attacks can be hard. That is because researchers do not really know what causes these attacks. They seem to think that it can be related to heredity or it could even be from stress. The important thing to remember is that panic attacks themselves are not dangerous to your body. However, you should get checked out to make sure that it’s nothing else. If it’s just panic attacks, then you have to find ways to cope with it. If it’s something else, then you have to have it taken care of right away.

However first you need to know if you actually suffer from panic attacks.

A TYPICAL PANIC ATTACK

You feel a sudden surge of overwhelming anxiety and fear. Your heart pounds and you can´t breathe. You feel dizzy and sick to your stomach. You may even feel like you are going crazy or dying.

There are 13 symptoms to look out for and if you experience at least 4 of these symptoms culminating within a period of ten to fifteen minutes and then slowly diminishing within a couple of hours you are having a panic attack.

Always go to a doctor to check your heart the first time you experience something like this. It could be a heart attack.

If you experience these symptoms and there is nothing wrong with your heart or you just seem to be too young to have a heart attack you can be sure it is an anxiety attack.

Raging heartbeat.
Difficulty breathing.
Terror that is paralyzing.
Fear of losing control.
Heart palpitation.
Dizziness.
Sweating.
Trembling.
Choking.
Fear.
Hot flashes or cold chills.
Tingling in fingers or toes.
Deathfear.

The key symptom/reason of repeated panic attacks is the persistent fear of getting another panic attack. This fear triggers more panic attacks.

Panic attacks normally appear when you are doing something that is NOT stressful, like sitting watching tv or even when you are sleeping.

Some more interesting facts are that about three fourths of panic patients are women and that most people have their first panic attack as a teenager.

CAUSES OF ANXIETY AND PANIC ATTACKS

The exact causes are unclear but the tendency to have panic attacks seem to run in families. Also there is a connection with major life transitions such as graduating from college and entering the workplace, getting married, and having a baby. Severe stress, sucha as the death of a loved one, divorce or job loss can also trigger a panic attack.
There could also be medical conditions that causes the attacks or other physical causes.

PANIC ATTACKS OFTEN LEAD TO OTHER COMPLICATIONS

Agoraphobia or other phobias, depression, substance abuse, medical complications, even suicide.

A recent study showed that people who suffer from panic attacks:

Are more prone to alcohol and other drug abuse.
Have greater risk of attempting suicide.
Spend more time in hospital emergency rooms.
Spend less time on hobbies, sports and other satisfying activities.
Tend to be financially dependent on others.
Report to be emotionally and physically less healthy than non-sufferers.
Are afraid of driving more than a few miles away from home.

As you can see your quality of life can be severely damaged if you do not treat your panic attacks. This is why it is so very important to decide to take control over your panic.

In general anxiety is the body`s natural response to danger. It functions like an automatic alarm system when a person feels threatened. Which is not something bad because anxiety can help us to stay alert and focused to solve problems. That means it is good to have a normal anxiety level.

 In short form a panic attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming fear and anxiety.

 Finally, many of the muscle groups tense up in preparation for “fight or flight” and this results in subjective feelings of tension, sometimes extending to actual aches and pains, as well as trembling and shaking.

 Every individual has slightly different anxiety attack symptoms. Having a panic attack for the first time people think they have caught some sickness. Often people experiencing a panic attack may assume that he or she is suffering from a heart attack due to chest pain and breathing problems.

 People who suffer from anxiety attack symptoms or anxiety disorder have lost control of their lives. They are constantly anxious about everything. Fear is completely dominating their mind.

For them it is highly important to seek help for the anxiety. It won´t go off just like this.

I have suffered from anxiety for over 10 years. I was an outsider as a child, and when I was a little older (as a teenager) I had really hard time coping with social situations. The most stressful situations for me were public speaking and talking to strangers which are the most frightening situations for most sufferers. What cause anxiety? Our brain always compares memories from the past to the situation you’re in right now and that’s how you can take the right action for the current situation. If a person experiences a lot of rejections in social situation than his brain will automatically anticipate disaster and will make your body react like you are in a real life threatening situation. Than, when a person get stressed a lot in social situations, he start avoiding them, which makes the anxiety attacks even worse. Therefore with every year passes the anxiety get worse. It’s important to deal with your fears as soon as possible.

But before we get to the actual information it’s important that you understand the differences between panic and anxiety attacks so you can diagnose what you suffer from and treat it better. The first difference is that anxiety attack usually last longer than panic attack and panic attack can overwhelm you quickly without warning. The second difference is that anxiety disorder sufferers afraid from failure or rejection and panic disorder sufferers afraid for their own medical condition (afraid that they’re going to die by getting a heart attack or stop breathing). Both anxiety disorder and panic disorder are triggered by stressful situations (work, social situations etc.). The symptoms and the treatments are very similar Even if there are slight differences between the two conditions.
